The Chemistry of Berries
Plenty of Maine inhabitants dread the state’s winters, but Edie and Geo Johnston aren’t among them. The cold climate contributes to exceptionally high levels of potent antioxidants in native and other varieties of elderberry that the Johnstons cultivate at Eldertide Farm for use in their Maine Medicinals nutraceuticals products. The sister companies have leveraged the TechStart, Seed Grant and Development Loan programs to explore and develop organic growing methods and manufacturing processes. Support from MTI’s SBIR/STTR Technical Assistance Program and a collaboration with the UMaine Food Science and Human Nutrition department helped them secure several federal research grants and the prestigious SBA Tibbetts Award for excellence in the SBIR program. A perennial favorite at MOFGA’s Common Ground Fair, the anthoimmune product can also be found in Whole Foods stores across the country.
