Meet Scott Bursey: Strengthening the Foundations Behind Maine’s Innovators

As a Senior Investment Officer and Turnaround & Workout Lead at Maine Technology Institute, Scott Bursey works alongside companies at pivotal moments. His role often begins when challenges arise—tightening cashflow, shifting markets, or the need to rethink a financial structure. From there, he helps companies stabilize, refocus, and move forward with renewed clarity.
At its core, his work is about stewardship and resilience, ensuring promising innovations have the runway they need to reach impact.
A Path Built on Collaboration
Scott’s connection to MTI began before he officially joined the team. While working at the Finance Authority of Maine, he collaborated with MTI on a financing package for a Maine high-tech manufacturer. That experience gave him a close-up view of how MTI enables entrepreneurs and established companies to develop and commercialize innovations.
Seeing the partnership between staff, board members, and ecosystem partners in action left a lasting impression. It wasn’t just about funding. It was about alignment and shared belief in Maine’s innovators.
What the Work Looks Like
Scott’s days are centered on supporting MTI’s portfolio companies, particularly those navigating complexities. He works with leadership teams to restructure loans in ways that improve cashflow and strengthen their path to commercialization. When challenges extend beyond capital, he helps connect companies to MTI’s E-Residents for guidance in engineering, sales, marketing, or operational strategy. He also collaborates internally on continuous improvement efforts, applying lessons from past investments to refine programs and strengthen outcomes.
His background in finance and economic development informs much of this work. With a strong understanding of funding programs across the ecosystem—and the expectations of banks and financial institutions—Scott helps companies evaluate their readiness for additional capital and determine the right fit for next-stage funding.
Seeing Impact in Real Time
What keeps Scott energized is watching innovation translate into tangible results. He sees Maine companies introduce new technologies, improve job quality, create opportunities, and unlock new markets. For him, the impact is cumulative and constant, visible across sectors and stages of growth.
When reviewing opportunities, he’s especially drawn to the creativity and commitment entrepreneurs bring to solving problems. Passion matters—but so does discipline. The advice he returns to most often is simple: take the time to do enough customer discovery to confirm your value proposition. In his view, validation is what transforms a promising idea into a sustainable business.
If he could remove one obstacle for Maine entrepreneurs, it would be expanding access to flexible funding during periods of cashflow strain—providing companies with more options when they need them most.
Life Outside the Office
Outside of work, Scott finds renewal along Maine’s waterways. Kayaking in Mount Desert Narrows, Somes Sound, Cobbossee, or Sebago Lake offers time to reset. He enjoys sitting on the rocks at Pemaquid Light House watching the waves or walking coastal trails in Harpswell, Boothbay, and Bar Harbor.
An ideal weekend includes working in the garden with his wife, a trip to the ocean, and time spent with their grandchildren. He’s currently revisiting the Gospels, enjoys mystery series like Dark Winds and the first season of True Detective, and keeps artists like Damien Rice, Matt Berninger, Michael Kiwanuka, and Bob Seger in his earbuds.
Behind many of Maine’s innovation stories are steady hands helping companies navigate complexity. Through thoughtful restructuring, honest conversations, and a focus on long-term viability, Scott Bursey plays a quiet but essential role in strengthening the foundations that allow innovation to endure.
