Supporting Maine’s Seafood Cluster
Through the Cluster Initiative Program, MTI has funded the Gulf of Maine Research Institute in its efforts to support and sustain Maine’s traditional seafood cluster through the development and expansion of a sustainably harvested certification program for the Gulf of Maine seafood and to tackle the difficult issue of traceability of seafood by piloting a full supply chain collaboration from harvester to food service sector.
The Gulf of Maine Responsibly Harvested® Brand helps consumers in their decision-making but also rewards seafood dealers and fishermen in their efforts to sustain the Gulf of Maine as a critical resource for Maine’s economy.
The Gulf of Maine Responsibly Harvested® Brand has been found at Hannaford, Shaw’s/Star Market, and Big Y supermarkets for almost five years, but is newly being used in university dining halls across New England, as well as K-12 public schools, hospitals, and corporate cafeterias. Over 100,000 students are seeing the label as of fall 2015.
Aggregated total sales of Gulf of Maine Responsibly Harvested® Brand product is at $81,040,913 to date, with royalties of $273,526 received by GMRI, thus making the program as well as the brand, sustainable.
