Meet Meredith Mendelson: Supporting the Future of Maine's Marine Innovation - Maine Technology Institute

Rencontrez Meredith Mendelson : Soutenir l'avenir de l'innovation marine du Maine

As Deputy Commissioner at the Maine Department of Marine Resources and a Maine Technology Institute board member, Meredith Mendelson brings deep knowledge of Maine’s marine industries to the innovation ecosystem. Her perspective is grounded in both stewardship of a heritage industry and a forward-looking commitment to diversification, helping ensure coastal communities remain vibrant for generations to come.

At MTI, her role centers on supporting new opportunities that build on Maine’s strengths while creating pathways for emerging sectors to grow.

A Connection Rooted in Maine’s Marine Economy

Meredith joined the MTI board after being nominated by Governor LePage. At the time, two board members with strong aquaculture expertise were terming off, and there was a clear need for someone familiar with both the aquaculture sector and the broader marine economy.

Having worked closely with the realities facing Maine’s coastal industries, she recognized how important innovation and diversification were for the future of these communities.

What the Work Looks Like

Much of Meredith’s day-to-day work outside of MTI focuses on one of Maine’s most important heritage industries: the lobster fishery. While it remains central to the state’s coastal economy, heavy reliance on a single industry also creates risk for communities that depend on it.

That’s where MTI’s mission resonates strongly with her. Supporting innovation that diversifies marine industries helps create new economic opportunities and ensures people can continue living and working in the communities they call home.

When reviewing projects and working with companies, Meredith is especially excited by initiatives that are built with their communities in mind. She values businesses that leverage local expertise, collaborate with stakeholders, and take the time to earn trust—even in spaces that may initially be skeptical of new ideas.

What Keeps the Work Energizing

For Meredith, one of the most inspiring parts of MTI is the team behind the work. She points to the staff’s dedication and willingness to keep creating opportunities for innovators, even when resources and capacity are stretched.

Their commitment reflects the broader spirit of Maine’s innovation ecosystem—people working together to move ideas forward.

Advice for Innovators

Drawing on her experience working within a regulatory agency, Meredith often encourages entrepreneurs to become familiar with the regulatory landscape early in their journey.

Reaching out to agencies that permit or oversee their work can open productive conversations, helping both sides better understand emerging technologies and potential challenges. Early communication, she notes, often leads to clearer expectations and smoother progress as businesses grow.

Life Outside the Office

When she’s not supporting Maine’s innovators, Meredith enjoys traveling abroad—something she’s especially appreciating now with her nine-year-old daughter. Traveling together has encouraged her to slow down and notice more about the places they visit.

Closer to home, she loves any opportunity to be on the water, whether sailing, paddleboarding, swimming, or fishing. An ideal weekend in Maine is simple: no firm plans, time at camp up north, and good friends nearby.

You’ll currently find The Pitt in her streaming queue—a nod to her hometown of Pittsburgh—and when dining out locally, Sammy’s Deluxe in Rockland is a favorite stop.
