Your organization or project must meet the following criteria to be eligible for Business Innovation Funding.

Vous devez être une organisation basée dans le Maine
Pour être admissible en tant qu'organisation basée dans le Maine, vous devez :
- Be registered with the State of Maine’s Bureau of Corporations.
- Être principalement basé dans l'État du Maine.
- MTI examine un certain nombre de facteurs lors de cette évaluation, notamment : si une organisation possède un siège social physique dans le Maine, si les principaux décideurs de l'organisation sont basés dans le Maine et le ratio d'employés à temps plein dans le Maine par rapport aux employés dans d'autres endroits.
MTI reçoit parfois des demandes d'organisations souhaitant s'implanter dans le Maine. En règle générale, les investissements approuvés par MTI ne sont débloqués qu'une fois des progrès substantiels réalisés dans la recherche d'un emplacement et/ou les activités lancées dans le Maine.

Votre organisation doit avoir une capacité d'innovation.
- MTI définit l'innovation comme un effort visant à créer quelque chose de nouveau ou à améliorer un produit, un service ou un procédé existant. Les innovations doivent se différencier sensiblement des solutions existantes. Nous soutenons les produits, procédés ou méthodes nouveaux ou sensiblement améliorés susceptibles de stimuler et de diversifier l'économie du Maine et d'accroître le nombre d'emplois de qualité dans tout l'État.
- MTI aide les candidats à évaluer leurs forces et leurs faiblesses afin de maximiser leurs chances de commercialiser avec succès leur innovation.
- MTI investit dans des activités ou des initiatives qui font progresser l'innovation et utilise une approche systématique du processus d'innovation.
- MTI reconnaît les six étapes de l'innovation. Nous soutenons les projets à toutes les phases du processus d'innovation — recherche, développement, commercialisation et pérennisation — pourvu qu'une méthodologie rigoureuse soit appliquée.
Votre innovation doit permettre à votre organisation de générer un impact économique supplémentaire dans le Maine.
MTI finance des projets qui contribuent à la croissance économique du Maine en créant des emplois ou en augmentant les recettes fiscales. Vous devez avoir accès à des fonds de contrepartie
MTI requires a matching investment equal to or greater than the amount of MTI funding requested. All MTI funding requires a concurrent cash investment by the client. In some cases we will consider “sweat equity,” in-kind services or costs for existing equipment or facilities for part of the match, but the cash match is weighted higher than other match in the application review process. VIRAL
MTI has chosen a nationally recognized assessment tool to help our clients identify their most urgent needs to maximize their chances of successfully commercializing their innovation or launching their program. This tool is called the Venture Investment Readiness & Awareness Levels or VIRAL® assessment.
What is VIRAL®?
VIRAL, Venture Investment Readiness Assessment Levels, is a framework originally developed by Village Capital, a nationally recognized leader in investment and entrepreneurial development.
It is a self-assessment tool for measuring the maturity of an organization or business across eight different areas including the development of:
- Team
- Problem and Vision
- Value Proposition
- Product
- Market
- Business Model
- Scale
- Exit
While the VIRAL® levels were developed with a focus on venture-investment readiness for a startup, MTI has chosen this tool because it can be used to assess nearly any type of product, service, process or organization and at every stage of development.
How does MTI use VIRAL®?
MTI, in partnership with Village Capital, has adopted and adapted this framework to help guide our investment decisions. While the tool is focused on venture-investment readiness, we believe it is applicable to nearly every type of organization, so anyone applying to MTI for funding should start with this assessment.
We invite you to take a look at the VIRAL framework and perform a self-assessment in advance of your conversation with MTI staff. The VIRAL assessment is now available to Maine enterprises in an online version called Abaca. MTI invites potential applicants to visit the site, complete a self-assessment and set up a profile to access information about resources available locally and nationally tailored to your VIRAL level and type of enterprise.
Knowing and understanding your VIRAL® level can help us ‘speak the same language’ and get to a shared understanding of what an MTI applicant needs to do to get to their next level of growth. Our goal is to be able to advise each applicant on what types of work are likely to be approved and how much MTI funding you are likely to qualify for. These recommendations directly correspond to your VIRAL level, with a goal of “leveling up”.
