Climate Change and the Fate of Kelp Forests - Maine Technology Institute

Climate Change and the Fate of Kelp Forests

Presented in partnership with Laboratorio Bigelow de Ciencias Oceánicas.

Presenter: Dr. Douglas Rasher, Senior Research Scientist

The Aleutian Islands occupy a remote, uninhabited region of the North Pacific. Nevertheless, the kelp forests that surround these islands have experienced dramatic change over the past century, and this coastal ecosystem is now rapidly warming and acidifying. Dr. Douglas Rasher, a senior research scientist at Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences, has spent the past three years studying these kelp forests to learn how the loss of large predators and climate change are together reshaping this wild ecosystem. Join him to discuss his findings, as well as how his research can help us understand changes that are occurring within our own Gulf of Maine.

Dr. Rasher will present for 30 minutes followed by a 30 minute Q&A with the audience.
