Meet Abby Osei: Supporting Maine’s Innovators at Every Stage

Abby Obesi

As an Investment Officer at Maine Technology Institute (MTI), Abby Osei works closely with founders across Maine as they navigate some of the earliest and most uncertain stages of building a company. Her role combines application review, strategic guidance, and long-term relationship-building as companies work toward meaningful growth.

With a strategic mindset and a strong interest in working alongside early-stage ventures, Abby has a deep appreciation for the role innovation plays in strengthening Maine’s economy and communities.

Drawn to the Intersection of Innovation and Public Good

In her capacity, Abby supports companies at pivotal moments—when early ideas begin turning into real-world solutions.

“I was drawn to MTI because of its unique position at the intersection of innovation, economic development, and public good,” she said. “Maine’s innovation community is deeply collaborative and mission-driven, and MTI plays a critical role in helping early-stage and growing companies turn ideas into real impact for the state.”

That sense of purpose continues to motivate her work. For Abby, MTI’s value lies not only in funding, but in how the organization meets companies where they are and helps unlock progress.

Seeing ideas and R&D projects move from concept to execution keeps her excited. “Whether it is a first prototype, entry into a new market or scaling operations, that kind of catalytic support is powerful.”

A Role Where No Two Days Are the Same

As an Investment Officer, Abby’s work reflects the diversity of companies MTI supports statewide.

“No two days are the same,” she said. “A typical day includes meeting with founders, reviewing grant and investment applications, coordinating with reviewers, and working internally to move projects forward.”

Beyond application review, Abby works directly with companies to help them sharpen their thinking and prepare for what comes next.

“I also spend time helping companies think through strategy, milestones, and how to position themselves for growth,” she added.

Bringing Financial and Strategic Insight to Early-Stage Ventures

Before joining MTI, Abby built a background in financial analysis and project management. That experience shapes how she works with founders today.

“Those skills show up in several ways every day,” she said, “particularly in helping founders translate complex ideas into clear, executable plans, assess and manage risk, and communicate their vision effectively to a wide range of stakeholders.”

When reviewing applications, Abby looks to the people behind it and how it could benefit Maine’s economy.

“I get most excited by projects that address a clearly defined problem with a thoughtful, innovative solution, supported by a team that shows strong potential and genuine commitment,” she said. “Also, strong alignment with Maine and a realistic path to impact, through jobs, revenue, or community benefit, always stands out.”

Seeing MTI’s Impact Firsthand

One of the most meaningful parts of Abby’s work is seeing how early MTI support can help companies gain momentum over time.

“One of my most memorable moments is seeing a pre-revenue company return after an initial MTI grant with real traction—new customers, new hires, and successful seed fundraising—and being able to trace that progress back to early MTI support,” she shared. “It reinforces just how critical patient, early, non-dilutive capital can be in helping businesses grow and succeed.”

That long-term perspective also shapes the advice she often shares with entrepreneurs.

“Be clear and honest about where you are,” Abby said. “You don’t need to have everything figured out, but clarity about your risks, assumptions, and next steps builds trust and leads to better support.”

She also emphasizes the importance of connection. “Just as importantly, keep building relationships,” she added. “Strong ideas grow faster when they are paired with strong connections.”

Looking Ahead, and Recharging Along the Way

Abby sees continued opportunity for Maine’s innovation ecosystem, particularly in sectors that build on the state’s existing strengths.

“There’re growing opportunities in climate tech, life sciences, digital health, and applied AI,” she noted, “especially solutions grounded in Maine’s existing strengths like forestry, marine industries, and healthcare.”

Outside of work, Abby values time to recharge and reflect. She enjoys spending time with family, quiet reflection, and engaging in church and community outreach activities. When the weather allows, she appreciates exploring Maine’s outdoors and embracing the state’s slower pace. Her ideal weekend is simple and unstructured: Cooking, church, and spending time with family and friends.

Whether supporting founders through complex decisions or stepping back to recharge, Abby brings clarity, steadiness, and purpose to her role at MTI. Her efforts help ensure that promising ideas have the momentum and guidance needed to move forward.
