From Engineering Firm to Scaled Manufacturer

Since its founding in 2011 as a spin-off from the University of Maine’s Advanced Structures and Composites Center, Compotech has grown from a small engineering team into an advanced manufacturing company serving the U.S. Department of Defense. Today, the company operates a 50,000-square-foot facility in Brewer, Maine and employs about 80 people, with the majority based in-state.

In its early years, Compotech focused on research and development. Around 2019, that began to change. The company made a deliberate shift toward manufacturing, with the goal of scaling beyond project-based engineering work. That transition allowed Compotech to expand production, take on larger contracts, and grow more efficiently.

A Unique Approach to Defense Solutions

Compotech develops protective solutions for high-risk environments, including advanced armor systems and expeditionary military shelters, while also building digital tools such as AI software.

This work spans three of MTI’s targeted technology sectors, Precision Manufacturing, Composites & Advanced Materials, and Information Technology, which is an uncommon overlap that allows the company to bring design, testing, and production capabilities together in-house.

MTI’s Role in Scaling Growth

MTI has been a key partner in Compotech’s growth. Early seed funding supported product development, but larger loan programs had the most significant impact on the company’s trajectory. Those investments enabled Compotech to build out its initial production lines, expand its manufacturing capabilities, and hire skilled employees to meet growing demand.

Compotech has since repaid those loans, allowing those funds to be reinvested in other Maine-based businesses. That cycle of support has helped strengthen the broader innovation ecosystem across the state.

The company is now preparing for its next phase of growth. With support from MTI’s MTAF program, Compotech is developing its Extendable Panelized and Collapsible Shelter (E-PACS) system, a new military shelter designed for protection, mobility, and rapid deployment. The funding will support additional equipment, expanded manufacturing capacity, and continued hiring as the product moves toward launch.

Real-World Impact and National Recognition

Compotech’s work has a direct impact in the field. Its protective systems have helped safeguard up to 5,500 soldiers, helping reduce exposure to danger and improve operational effectiveness. For the team, that impact is a constant reminder of what their work supports.

The company’s growth has also been recognized at a national level. Compotech has appeared on the Inc. 5000 list of fastest-growing companies for three consecutive years and was recently named the 2026 Maine and New England Small Business Manufacturer of the Year by the U.S. Small Business Administration. It has also been recognized as one of CompositeWorld’s Top Shops globally.

Built in Maine, Supported by a Strong Network

Compotech’s success has been shaped by Maine’s collaborative business environment. In addition to MTI, the company has worked closely with the University of Maine, the Advanced Manufacturing Center, and Maine MEP to strengthen its operations. These partnerships have supported everything from implementing quality systems to improving manufacturing processes and accessing specialized equipment.

Support from the SBA also played an important role in the company’s early growth, providing the backing needed to establish a strong foundation.

Operating in the Bangor region offers access to a skilled and growing workforce. Compotech draws talent from the University of Maine and provides opportunities for graduates to stay and build careers locally. As the company has expanded, it has maintained strong employee retention while continuing to add technical and manufacturing roles.

Building a Lasting Company in Maine

Compotech’s long-term focus is on building a sustainable company that continues to grow in Maine while delivering reliable, high-performance solutions to its customers. By expanding its manufacturing capabilities and continuing to develop new technologies, the company is working to strengthen its position in the defense sector and contribute to Maine’s evolving manufacturing economy.
