MTI Blog
8/12/10 - We've got a new look...
After 10 years of working to fund Maine technology businesses and research ventures, MTI has launched a new website, updated our logo and shortened our moniker to our initials, MTI to allow us to cost-effectively strengthen our outreach throughout Maine and beyond. As the Maine Technology Institute, our mission is unchanged. Funding innovative activity in Maine continues to be central to our mission. As a vibrant organization reaching out across the state to fund dynamic technology-based business ventures, our look has changed. We’re hearing from folks that they like the new look! But why the change?
MTI was created by the Maine legislature in 1999 as a private, non-profit organization to encourage, promote, stimulate and support research and development activity leading to the commercialization of new products and services in Maine’s technology-intensive industrial sectors. Since 2000, MTI has been funding proposals from technology-based businesses and research projects across the state -- projects that pay a good wage and whose products and services are solving both Maine’s and the world’s problems -- from energy to food to transportation to medical technology. From small Seed Grants for start-ups to million dollar state bond investments in research and development infrastructure, MTI funds Maine businesses in their early and expansion stages as well as research organizations and industry groups that build Maine’s research and innovation competitiveness.
Over these past ten years, we have learned that investment in Maine’s innovation economy works. Stories featuring some of the results of MTI’s investments are now front and center on the website.
We’ve also learned that people can be confused by the word Institute in our title. Some have expected that we offer technology training. Some have expected expect research papers about Maine’s technology. Over time, through the many questions we field, we have realized that our name does not necessarily suggest the catalyst funding and support that we provide to exciting ventures in the state; in short, that MTI’s look needed to change to reflect our engagement with Maine’s entrepreneurs. We hope that the new website and our expanding outreach helps to spread the word and the great stories that emerge weekly about the talent and innovation in Maine companies.
As we move into our second decade helping to create a prosperous future for Maine, we invite everyone interested in the Maine’s economy to join in the conversation and stay tuned to the MTI website and social channels for more details, success stories and opportunities for engaging with the innovation economy in Maine.
