9/9/10 - Back to school

It’s back to school time. And this fall, twelve Maine entrepreneurs are working their way through the Top Gun program at the Maine Center for Enterprise Development. Established in 2009 with funding, in part, from the Maine Technology Institute, Top Gun has quickly become a magnet both for promising entrepreneurs seeking support, guidance and mentorship to help grow their companies as well as a group of talented mentors who offer that support. Of the twelve in this year’s class, six are MTI-funded companies – Janet Eugley’s EchoHeart LLC; Odgen Morse’s Academic Merit; Christopher Stickney’s MTK Technology Group; Sergie Breus and Mary Alice Hurvitt’s Blue Stream Power; Amy Ireland’s ZumSport LLC and Thomas Hall’s Hall Web Services.

Evidence has shown that innovative companies that get seed capital along with intensive and focused guidance during their early stage development have a greater chance of becoming businesses with high growth and high return prospects. At MTI, we know that successful technology development does not necessarily ensure a successful company and job creation. As MTI looks forward to working with Maine entrepreneurs and research organization to grow a sustainable economy for Maine’s future, we have increased our commitment to linking early-stage companies with mentors and partner organizations who share the vision of seeing Maine’s entrepreneurial economy grow. Working with a team of experienced business executives, active investors and resource organizations across the state, MTI offers entrepreneurs guidance and links them to resources to help them create profitable enterprises, raise follow-on capital and grow good jobs in Maine. Top Gun is an exciting program that provides a meaningful curriculum and mentoring focused on the needs of early-stage entrepreneurs.

If six months is too long for you, you might want to consider signing up for a three-day Innovation Engineering Leadership workshop. These workshops, developed by the University of Maine and Doug Hall’s Eureka Ranch, help entrepreneurs and nonprofit executives learn how to create, communicate and commercialize new ideas. The next Maine workshop starts on Monday, September 27th, in Hermon. For more information, here’s the link: http://www.innovationengineering.info.

However you develop them, keep the good ideas coming!
